Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the disease when your heart muscle becomes thicker or enlarged. The work “hypertrophy” means enlargement; this enlargement of heart wall impedes the heart to work properly.
It is rare disease, not found in more than 0.2 %of U.S population. It can be found in men and women of any age and deems to be inherited. Rarely, it occurs without any family history of such disease.
People with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy run the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and death without any symptom. It differs in heart attack since with heart attacks the arteries are blocked and blood stops flowing to heart. But in this case simply the heart stops beating without any symptom. The adults who are diagnosed with this disease only one in two of them have symptom. Others are diagnosed while being through routine check up or tests.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy can be caused when heart valve is not working properly or with high blood pressure. The thickening of heart wall may obstruct blood flow. In fact heart muscles are quite adaptive and regulated by specific genes. With family history of genetic disorder this thickening of heart wall may occur without blood pressure or valve problem and they are called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
So, people develop hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in both ways. Though, 60 to 70 per cent of patients have a family history of gene disorder. Remaining percentage develops for other valve or blood pressure related problems.
Studies have successfully identified four out five genes but the fifth gene could not be identified yet but research could locate its existence in chromosome 7. In most cases doctors fail to treat cardiomyopathy instead treat the symptoms of congestive heart ailments with drugs or heart transplant.
Cardiomyopathy impedes the blood flows through heart; surgery rectifies seven out of ten patients. Post surgery complications slows the heart beat down, implanting the pace maker solves the problem.
