Can Walking Truly Make a Difference?

Walking your way to a healthy heart is something that virtually every doctor agrees is effective.  The best part about walking is that you do not have to do it at a particular speed to be effective.  While certainly aerobic walking is the most effective, walking at any speed is still a very heart healthy thing to do.  The real question is how much of a difference walking can actually make on your heart health?

Most people will get a significant amount of benefit from a moderate walking plan.  The biggest benefactors are those that have trouble with their good cholesterol being too low and their bad cholesterol being too high.  There are some studies that say that triglycerides respond favorably to walking and exercise. Cholesterol issues are responsive to walking because the exercise helps to lower or raise those numbers.

Walking is also highly effective because some patients are unable to do other forms of exercise.  Jogging for example is a great form of exercise, but it is too high impact for some.  Not everyone is able to do such moderate exercise, and walking gives them a safe yet effective way of maintaining good heart health.

Walking is also great because you can do it most anywhere.  Some people walk around the block, while others get their walking in at a local park during their break at work.  This flexibility makes walking one of the easiest forms of exercise to stick to.  Any doctor will tell you that exercise you will stick to is the most effective form there is.   The biggest problem with exercise is sticking to the regimen.  Because you can walk anywhere, it is very easy to ensure you do.

While walking is far from perfect, it is the closest thing to perfect exercise that we know of.  Doctors universally agree to the benefits of walking.  In spite of this unanimous opinion, one should still be sure to consult their doctor about a walking regimen.  This way they can tailor your walking plan to fit your needs and safety.
